Laughter is infectious, irresistible and unstoppable. An adage says, “Laughter is the best medicine.” And sure enough an increasing number of doctors are prescribing laughter therapy for patients who live a stressful life.

LAUGHTER AS THERAPY

“Laughter rejuvenates mind, body and soul and it helps maintain a healthy relationship,” says, S Sampath, founder secretary of Humour Club, Ambattur. People the world over are turning to the concept of laughter and think that it might be one of the best medicines to heal and remain healthy.

BENEFITS OF LAUGHTER

So what are the benefits of laughing? How does it help ease stress and make life more enjoyable? “The health benefits of laughter are many and even cardiac and diabetic patients are able to benefit by practicing it,” says S Bala Koti, founder and teacher at the Laughter Club, Anna Nagar Tower Park.

INCREASES BLOOD CIRCULATION

Laughter is very good for the heart. It increases blood circulation. “Humour is known to lower blood pressure. A laugh is an exercise and is very often likened to a self-massage,” says S Ve Shekher, who has made numerous audiences laugh with his witty dialogues rib-tickling comedy dramas. “It is proved that after a hearty laugh, the blood pressure is lowered,” he adds. So, if you are not able to get up and walk or jog, try out laughing.

IMPROVES THE IMMUNE SYSTEM

Laughter is supposed to increase the number of natural cells that kill harmful viruses.

GOOD FOR THE RESPIRATORY SYSTEM

Laughter therapy involves deep breathing exercises, which increase lung capacity that helps you keep fit. Respiratory problems such as asthma, bronchitis and frequent colds are warded off by frequent laughter. Laughter is good for the lungs as it provides an aerobic workout for the diaphragm.

REDUCTION IN STRESS HORMONES

While laughing, endorphins are released. These are the body’s natural pain killers and thus pain is reduced. Moreover, laughter provides distraction from pain. It allows a person to set aside thoughts of aches and pains.

RELAXES ALL MUSCLES IN THE BODY

When someone gives in to a wholehearted laugh, the muscles take a breather. Laughter allows for a complete relaxation of every muscle in your body.

OTHER BENEFITS

Laughter can make people come together and break down barriers. Laughter fights loneliness and recharges you. It can motivate people and develop self-confidence. So go tell a joke, watch a comedy, or join your peers at a laughter club. After all, as Jean Houston said, “At the height of laughter, the universe is flung into a kaleidoscope of new possibilities.”
