Love the skin you’re in

Many people are unhappy with something about themselves

Do you love your body? Most people would say that they like their bodies, but do not like their nose, tummy, cellulite or arms. Almost everyone has some hang-up about their body. Yes, even the ‘flawless’ models staring happily at you from magazine covers fret about their body parts. The increase in the number of cosmetic surgeries, breast enhancements and nose jobs all but confirm this. The way you think about your body has a great bearing on how you look, and the message you send across to the world. If you feel good and confident, then that is how people perceive you, and the reverse is also true. Here are some practical tips for a better body image:

STOP BEING HYPERCRITICAL

Don’t pick at your flaws all the time. Instead, learn to love yourself as a whole. Be more connected to your body. Take a walk and feel your body in motion. Appreciate how strong and dynamic your body is.

BE REALISTIC

Know what you can change and what you can’t. You can probably knock off a few kilos, but you can’t change the basic shape of your body. No one is perfect. Set realistic goals for yourself and then stick to them.

MAKE FITNESS FUN

Pursue an activity that spruces up your mood. It could be as simple as spending half- an-hour working in the garden, walking your dog, playing Frisbee or simply running in a field and feeling the wind in your hair.

WEAR CLOTHES YOU FEEL COMFORTABLE IN

Sift through your closet and clear out everything that makes you feel bad about your body. Invest in a pair of good jean that flatter your body type. Don’t buy small sizes thinking that you’ll lose weight for them. Buy clothing that fits you well and makes you feel good.

PAMPER YOUR BODY

Your body is the vehicle that carries you around all day. Lighten up and be good to it. Pamper it with massages, rest, relaxation and good wholesome food. Listen to its need. Answer nature’s call when it asks you to. Give your body water when it’s thirsty and food when it’s hungry. Nourish it and it’ll take good care of you all your life.
